How do I obtain the log file for Report Runner Viewer or Report Runner Batch?
1) Please ATTACH complete log files. Never paste the log file text into the ticket. This creates a massively long ticket and sometimes it will get blocked or sent to SPAM.
2) Please do not ZIP up a bunch of random log files. Send us the ONE log file that is specific to the error or issue you are reporting. If a report won't run, send us the log file showing that specific report run. If you're having a licensing issue, send us the log showing you apply the licensing.
3) Again, send only ONE log file. We can not search multiple log files (unless we specifically request multiple log files).
4) Do not send JNRRA* log files or *XREF* unless specifically requested.
5) As of version 2020.380, our software has a built-in way to find the last 5 log files.
We are here to help you! When you contact us for support, we will always request the log file to know how to best serve you with your particular request.
To obtain the log file, simply do the following...
1) Open Report Runner (Viewer or Batch).
2) Select [Help] from the top menu bar. Note, if you do not see the Help menu, you have configured the software to hide this menu option. Open your INI configuration file and enable the Help menu to be shown.
3) Click on the [Debugging] button.
4) You can either have the software find the log files for you (see "last 5 log files" option in menu) or you can manually find the log file. To do that, from the drop down menu, select the option [Open Log File Directory]. This will open the exact location of the log files for you. You can sort by Date Modified to see latest log file.
5) The Report Runner log files starts with JNRR*LOG*.TXT (JNRRV* for Viewer logs and JNRRB* for Batch logs). Simply send us the log file with the particular error message you are experiencing. Do NOT just send the last log file or randomly pick a log file. Again, as of 2020.380, there is a built-in option to find the last 5 log files for you.
Note: Always send the FULL log file. Do not copy and paste what you see as relevant. Also, please do not send all log files. We only need the log file showing the error. If you don't know what log file to choose or you don't want to look through the log files, the easiest thing to do is exit Report Runner, restart Report Runner, retry your report(s) (and assuming it fails again), exit Report Runner, sort log files in Date Modified order, and send latest log file.
If you are sending us the log file in an email, continue steps 6-8...
ATTACH the log file to email (do NOT open log and paste text of log into message body):
6) You can select the log file (left-click with your mouse one time) from the Windows Explorer Window and then copy by a right-click with your mouse and select the copy function. You can also use the keyboard shortcut for the copy function.
7) Then go to your email client and place your mouse cursor in the message body of your email you are sending to us. Right-click with your mouse and select the paste function. You can also use the keyboard shortcut for the paste function.
8) You should now see your log file attached to your email.
Note: If Debugging is not on (it's on by default), you can turn it on in the same menu: Help, Debugging.
How do I know which log file to send?
For Report Runner Batch, if it's a scheduled batch, there is a monthly XREF that shows which log goes with which scheduled batch. If it's not a scheduled batch, it's the log for the session where you had Report Runner Batch open. If it's the current session, then it's the current log file.
For Report Runner Viewer, each time you start Report Runner Viewer, it generates a new log file (NOT each time you run a report, but each time you START the application). So, if you just ran a report and it failed, it's going to be the current log file. If you're helping someone who got a report error, if you don't know which log file to send, start up Report Runner Viewer and rerun the report. Assuming it then fails, send us that current log file.
Log files are just text files. You can double-click them to open them and search for the report to make sure you're sending the right one.
